MERIDIAN, Miss. (WTOK) - Despite some limitations due to COVID-19, the city of Meridian is going ahead with plans for a couple of big events to kick-off the holiday season.

Mayor Percy Bland will host the annual city of Meridian tree lighting ceremony Tuesday, Dec. 1, at 5:30 p.m. at city hall lawn.

The ceremony will feature appearances by local musician Daniel Houze, dance performances led by the MCC Ballerinas, the lighting of the tree and your favorite holiday songs.

”We really want it to be a festive event and a festive time,” said Laura Carmichael, community development director. “At the same time, watching and maintaining our social distancing and adhering to those COVID guidelines that are out there. So we’re going to make it a safe tree lighting event and at the same time we want to celebrate what this holiday season means to our city and means to our families.”

The annual Christmas parade will be Saturday, Dec. 5, at 5 p.m.
