JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) - The Mississippi House of Representatives voted to approve the “In God We Trust” flag.

The flag was the first item on the agenda Tuesday, as House Bill 1 for 2021.

Voters approved the design in November.

The bill must also pass the Senate before it will officially fly over the Capitol.

House Speaker Philip Gunn says a ceremony at the Capitol is planned for this week, which would be similar to the one in July when the old flag was removed.

Earlier:

Mississippi legislators have begun their 2021 session. One of the first issues taken up was finishing the adoption of a new state flag that voters approved overwhelmingly last year. It features a magnolia blossom and the phrase, “In God We Trust.”

The House adjourned at 12:15 for the Rules Committee to meet to address the issue of the flag.

Legislators voted six months ago to retire the last state flag in the U.S. that had the Confederate battle emblem, a change that was made as part of a national reckoning over racial injustice.

A commission designed the new flag, and voters approved the design in November. Legislators now have to vote to make the new flag an official state symbol.
