BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) - Katie Britt has announced her Republican candidacy for the U.S. Senate.

The seat is being vacated by the retirement of U.S. Senator Richard Shelby (R-AL).

Britt previously served as Shelby’s chief of staff and she is the former president of the Business Council of Alabama.

Britt made her announcement in a video release.

On Thursday, Senator Shelby confirmed his endorsement of Britt to Politico magazine.

In an interview with Politico, Shelby said: “She’s like family. She’d make a good candidate. She’s probably the best-qualified candidate to come along in a long time.”
