Barge sinks in north Mississippi
COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) - A runaway barge crashed into the Stennis Lock and Dam and is creating problems upstream.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers told WCBI the barge broke loose about midnight and started floating down the Tenn-Tom Waterway. It sank and restricting water from going through the lock and downstream. Five to 10 inches of rain has fallen in the area since Sunday.
Now, roads and neighborhoods north of the lock are starting to see rising waters. The Corps said the water must recede before the barge can be removed from the river.
The name of the company that owns the barge and where it was docked was not immediately released.
