Names released in Saturday night’s Multi-Vehicle crash in Newton County

NEWTON, Miss. (WTOK) -Newton County Sheriff Deputies, Newton Police Department, Mississippi Highway Patrol, Newton Fire, and Hickory Fire responded to the scene of a Multi-Vehicle accident Saturday evening.

The accident occurred on the I-20 eastbound lane near mile marker 114. Four cars were involved, and one car was fully involved in flames. At least two fatalities were confirmed.

67-year-old Amarnath Thirumalaiyer and 56-year-old Sujatha Amarnath, both from Allen, Texas, were the two individuals who died in the crash.

Mississippi Highway Patrol confirms that the 2023 Honda they were driving was involved in a separate accident before being struck by an 18-wheeler traveling eastbound on I-20.

It was also confirmed that the second crash involving the 18-wheeler is what caused the fatalities.
