Bulldogs officially introduce new baseball Head Coach Brian O’Connor
STARKVILLE, Miss. (WTOK) - A new era has begun for Mississippi State baseball. After a nationwide search, the university has hired Brian O’Connor as its next head baseball coach. A proven winner with an impressive résumé, O’Connor arrives in Starkville after two decades of sustained success at the University of Virginia. He was formally introduced as the 19th head coach in Mississippi State history, stepping into a position at one of college baseball’s most tradition-rich programs.
Mississippi State is a place where expectations run high. With a loyal fan base and a national championship secured in 2021, the Bulldogs are widely recognized as one of the elite programs in the country. O’Connor will now be tasked with leading that legacy into a new chapter.
Athletic Director Zac Selmon expressed his excitement following the hire.
“Oh, just felt overjoyed,” Selmon said. “Not because of the search itself, but because of the impact this will have on so many young men. That’s why I got into this business—the life-changing moments that happen in college sports. Brian O’Connor aligns directly with that mission. I was excited for our players, for our future, and for the recruits we’ll bring in. It’s going to be really special.”
O’Connor brings with him an impressive track record. In 21 seasons at Virginia, he led the Cavaliers to 18 NCAA Tournament appearances, seven trips to the College World Series in Omaha, and captured the national title in 2015. His ability to consistently produce high-level teams earned him widespread respect across college baseball.
The decision to leave Virginia was not one O’Connor made lightly. He addressed the move during his introductory press conference in Starkville.
“There’s so much that goes into a decision like this,” O’Connor said. “This is an incredibly special place. The program is supported at the highest level, and the history and tradition here are unmatched.”
He credited Zac Selmon for playing a significant role in convincing him to make the move.
“If I was going to leave a place I loved and worked at for 22 years, it had to be the right partnership first and foremost. And this was it. The timing was right in my career, and for my family. There have been other schools that reached out over the years—but make no mistake, this was the right opportunity.”
There’s no doubt State fans are excited and ready for O’Connor to get to work.
