MERIDIAN, Miss. (WTOK) - One person is dead and four others have been transported to hospitals following a large fire early Tuesday morning.

The two story home on 19th Street and 35th Avenue was engulfed in flames when firemen arrived around 1:00 a.m. When the call came out there were reports of multiple people trapped inside of the home. Meridian police officers and Meridian firefighters rushed to locate the residents. After a few minutes firemen rushed two children and two adults into nearby ambulances. Later, firefighters located a fifth person that was deceased.

“From my understanding, when the fire department got inside they located four people immediately. It was an adult female, adult male and two children. All of those have been transported to local hospitals and some have been transported to University Medical Center by helicopter. We found a fifth victim in one of the front bedrooms that was a black male that succumbed to smoke inhalation,” Coroner Clayton Cobler says.

The conditions of those injured are currently unknown.
