MERIDIAN, Miss. (WTOK) - Meridian police are investigating a deadly shooting that took place in a busy part of the city Friday night.
Captain John Griffith says it happened at the Shell gas station on the Highway 39 bypass near the Hampton hotel.
Police say just after 11:00 p.m. a dark colored car drove by with someone shooting out of the window toward the gas station.
One person was hit by a bullet and was taken to an area hospital where the man died from his injuries. Coroner Clayton Cobler says the man that died was 26-year-old.
Griffith says when the shooting took place, the victim was standing next to a car at the Shell station.
Witnesses tell Newscenter 11 that at the time of the shooting the store had several customers inside when the shots rang out. They say the glass shattered and they all hit the floor.
Witnesses say they looked up and saw a man grabbing the middle part of his body before slumping over at the gas pump. Witnesses say they heard roughly four shots.
They say the victim had just paid for gas before the shooting.
Investigators are trying to determine a potential motive for the shooting and who, if anyone, was the intended target in the drive-by shooting.
