LAUDERDALE CO., Miss. (WTOK) - Community members who support the local Boy Scouts were out at Camp Binachi for the 10th annual Sporting Clays for Character Friday.
“Today and tomorrow we’ll have 36 teams and 144 shooters, shooting for fun throughout the woods with different presentations of clays and the money all goes to a great cause which is building character in our youth today,” says Ken Kercheval, the scout executive/CEO of the Choctaw Area Council Boy Scouts of America.
The event comes right in time for recruiting season for the Scouts.
“This is really a big event for us, it’s our largest special event. We’ll net well over $30,000 to our operation,” Kercheval says. “It’s essential for us to finish out our year strong with our budget, especially for right now because we’re in all the schools and so this is our big recruiting season. That’s a costly time of year to get out and get to meet all the kids and get them signed up.”
This year’s event set a record.
“We have several new teams this year and we also have some repeat customer, it’s a pretty solid event,” Kercheval says. “But this is the largest in the 10 years we’ve been doing this. This is our largest with 144 shooters, so we’re really excited to have a group this big.”
People from all over the community came to support the event.
“Our character sponsors today, I certainly want to do a shout out to them, is Structural Steel and Silicon Ranch, and then our gold sponsors are Coca-Cola and Medical Arts Surgical Group, and just a ton of silver sponsors, and station sponsors,” Kercheval says. “The community has always been good to scouting and they sure showed up this year too.”
There will be another Morning Flight for Sporting Clays for Character Saturday morning.
