MERIDIAN, Miss. (WTOK)- The athletes of the year have been chosen for the State Games of Mississippi.
53 athletes of all ages were called up to the stage at a banquet Saturday night to receive their award for their accomplishments.
However, one woman and one man were chosen as 2019 athletes of the year.
Stephanie Cayula was selected as female athlete of the year. She participated in the cycling event.
"I like to see more women out there competing. Definitely more women and more youth athletes in cycling," said Cayula.
Larry Dudley was picked for male athlete of the year. He competed in the trail run.
"It was an unbelievable surprise and I can't tell you how humble I am to be able to be here tonight and to receive this award. It's special," said Dudley.
Tulio Figarola was the youth athlete of the year. He competed in swimming.
"I was very excited when I got it because I knew there were going to be about almost 40 sports competing," said Figarola.
These athletes will take part in the torch ceremony at the State Games opening ceremonies on June 5th next year.
