MERIDIAN, Miss. (WTOK)- Meridian Housing Authority hosted the 4th annual Strong Family Initiative Saturday.
This initiative supports and encourages families to become educationally, economically and independently aware of being self-sufficient.
"We want every resident who lives in affordable housing units to leave here with the opportunity to purchase their own homes," said MHA executive director Ron Turner.
More than a dozen vendors across the city came out offering their services and information about home ownership to local residents..
"At these tables we have twelve great partners that are helping Meridian Housing Authority reach their goals and their initiatives," said Meridian Mayor Percy Bland.
Newscenter 11 spoke with a few vendors like Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated and Greater Meridian Health Clinic about their roles in this event.
"Today we are here to help register for voter registration. We are here for the strong initiative and to make sure that all families are registered voters," said AKA’s Sonya Salter.
"I think it's awesome to let the community know that we are here for them. A lot of times people always wonder what's out there for us or what's available. Well today is one of those days where we come forth to let you know this is what we have available," said Greater Meridian Health Clinic representative Jaqitta Patton.
This event features fun activities for the whole family with the main purpose of stressing the importance of support among family members.
"We have had individuals who have come out to this event. They have gone to college to get their degrees. The individuals that have come out to this event have signed mortgages to their own homes," said Turner.
Vendors that participated included Behavioral Health Services, Humana and United Health Care.
