MACON, Miss. (WTOK) - An inmate from the Noxubee County Community Work Center in Macon escaped Monday and led authorities on a wild high-speed chase with shots being fired.
29-year-old Terry Pierce Jr. escaped police custody leaving a trail of destruction in his wake.
Pierce escaped from the Noxubee County Community Work Center in Macon Monday afternoon and stole a truck.
Kemper County Sheriff James Moore says the suspect led agencies down Highway 45. He says authorities had Pierce pinned in at Highway 16 and Highway 45. Then, there was an exchange of gunfire, which was all captured on video from a witness at a gas station nearby.
The sheriff says the suspect drove off, attempting to hit a deputy.
"Gunfire was exchanged to try and take the vehicle out. He was able to get out of the way of the officers and back onto Highway 45. He spun out and, by that time, two more sheriff's deputies pinned his car in with theirs," Moore says.
Moore says one of his deputies is in the hospital due to injuries sustained in the wreck. He is expected to be okay. Pierce was serving 15 years out of Pearl River County for aggravated assault and fleeing and eluding in 2009.
