Freak accident kills off-duty corrections officer

LAUDERDALE COUNTY, Miss. (WTOK) - A corrections officer with the Lauderdale County Sheriff's Department and a first responder died Thursday in a freak accident at his home.

Coroner Clayton cobbler says 37-year-old Jonathan Mowery was working on his truck on Mini Farm Road when it fell on him.

Cobler says it's always difficult losing someone that works to help others on a routine basis.

“Thursday afternoon about 1:45 p.m. Metro received a call for assistance of a gentleman that had a truck fall on him. First responders had pulled him out, but it was obvious it was instant death. The jack must have failed or fell over,” Cobler says.

Mowery was highlight in our First Responders segment back in February. Mower was also a volunteer firefighter at Long Creek Fire Department.
