MERIDIAN, Miss. (WTOK) - The search for 41 year old Christopher Denson is now over. The suspect was taken into custody at 1:30 PM Sunday in the Meridian Estates apartment complex on Highway 39.
Meridian police officers discovered Denson's vehicle and approached his apartment with caution. Denson was taken into custody without incident from an apartment. He was loaded into the back of a patrol car and taken to the police department.
It happened around 8:00 p.m. at the “1st and 10 Lounge” on Highway 493. Capt. John Griffith says Denson went to his vehicle during the gathering and retrieved an AK-47 rifle. Griffith says Denson then shot and killed his uncle, Almond Turner, 69. Investigators say there were roughly six shots fired before someone grabbed Denson. They say Denson’s brother took the AK-47 from him after the shooting.
The victim, 69-year Almond Turner, was a beloved member of the law enforcement community in Georgia. He was assistant police chief in Covington, Georgia for 20 years and had a law enforcement career that spanned 45 years. He was also a member of the Newton County (Georgia) Board of Education since 1996. He retired in 2016.
Denson has been charged with murder and his bond has been set at $1 million.
