SUMTER COUNTY, Ala. (WTOK) - The year 2018 is a large election for the state of Alabama, with contests from governor on down on the ballot.
In Sumter County, Sheriff Brian Harris, a Democrat, is challenged by independent Demetrius Thomas.
There are several district seats up for grabs on the county board of education, the county commission and for coroner.
Newscenter 11 asked some voters what they think is most important about exercising this right Tuesday.
"Because it's a God-given right in our Constitution," said Sumter County voter Alvin Marson.
"Because of our forefathers. What they have done in the past. It is our right to come out and do our speech. When we vote, we have power," said Sumter County voter Diana Woodard.
Alabama's polls are open till 7 p.m.
