Antique gate stolen from cemetery in Kemper County

MERIDIAN, Miss. (WTOK) - An historic gate dating back to 1869 was stolen recently from a cemetery in Kemper County. People who have family buried there just want it returned.

The antique gate was taken from Union Cemetery on Firetower Road. The cemetery is on the same property as Union United Methodist Church. Members of that church say they were heartbroken when they noticed it missing on Father's Day.

"It just makes my stomach hurt to think about this, somebody coming and taking something from our cemetery. My husband and I are going to be buried here, his family is here and our church members are here. This is family. This is home for us and it feels like we've just been violated. Someone has intruded upon our home and our lives," said church member, Wendy Wade.

Wendy and her husband, Robert, say they noticed the gate was missing as they were leaving church June 16.

"I’m seventy years old. This gate has been here as long as I can remember," said Robert Wade.

The couple says the only justice they want is for their generational gate to be returned to its rightful place.

"We wish the person who did this will have a change of heart and would bring it back. We're hoping that our sheriff's department, that we have full trust in, will work with us to get this gate back," said Wendy Wade.

The Wades say this is the cemetery where they have chosen to be buried, to be surrounded by family.

"We’re looking at the place where me and my husband have chosen for final resting spots. We already had our headstones placed here," said Wendy Wade.

The Wades ask if you see or recognize the gate anywhere, to contact the Kemper County Sheriff's Department.
