Lauderdale County Animal Control not only takes in pets but also serves as an adoption facility that has gained attention.

Director Rocky Rockette tells Newscenter 11 rescue organizations from as far away as Tennessee and Michigan have traveled to Meridian just to visit the shelter.

Rockette considers the frequent adoptions a good thing since the shelter often takes in a lot of animals. He said just this week nearly all of the animals at the shelter were picked up by the Mississippi Humane Society.

"We have rescue organizations that come from that far. We utilize our Facebook page and we utilize pet finder," said Rockette. "Those are the kind of databases where you can go and search any specific breeds that you're searching for."

Rockette says the uptick in adoptions by humane organizations happened about a year ago.
