WASHINGTON, D.C. (WTOK) - The U.S. Census Bureau has launched a hiring recruitment campaign to prepare for the 2020 Census.
The agency will need about 500,000 census takers across the country to conduct the count required by the U.S. Constitution.
The pay for these temporary jobs is well above the local minimum wage.
The Census Bureau says it's very important, especially for rural and poor areas, to be counted because federal programs are often tied to population data.
"And this is money for schools, for senior centers, health clinics, transportation, emergency management. So every single thing you could think about how a community could benefit is definitely benefited by census data. So definitely these types of communities need to be counted," said 2020 Census program manager, Maria Olmedo-Malagon.
The pay rate for the jobs varies depending on where you live, but in east Mississippi and west Alabama, the jobs will pay $15.00 per hour.
