MERIDIAN, Miss. (WTOK) - After a hearing Monday, the charges against Dezjuan Moffite, 16, have been amended.

Moffite was initially charged with capital murder when his alleged accomplice died in a home invasion at St. Francis Apartments in Meridian. The charges now are manslaughter, attempted murder and armed robbery.

Police say Moffite and Randerious Martin, 22, who was wearing a mask,
went to an apartment at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 3 with the intention of robbing the people inside. The door was opened when someone recognized Moffite, but both men forced their way in with guns, demanding money.

A physical altercation followed. Police say one of the intruders tried to shoot at the victims, but the gun didn't fire. That's when investigators believe someone inside the home went for the gun, fired it, and Martin died.

The MPD said Moffite didn't fire the gun but is responsible for Martin's death because he was engaged in the commission of a crime.
