Child shot in Meridian remains in critical condition
A child shot accidentally in Meridian Tuesday night remained in critical condition Wednesday evening.
Meridian Police Department spokesperson, Lt. Rita Jack, says the girl was shot by an 8-year-old relative at a home in the 2100 block of 9th Avenue. Two other children were also in the home at the time, but no adults were present.
Police say they still have no information on how the boy got the gun, but believe the shooting was accidental.
The injured child was rushed to a Jackson hospital where she remained in critical condition Wednesday.
Jack says it's heartbreaking to hear about shootings that are preventable, especially ones involving children.
"Do not leave a loaded, unsecured firearm in a home with a child or children," said Jack.
Jack says the MPD gives out gun safety locks at headquarters. If you have any information about the shooting, call the Meridian Police Department.
