Clarkco participates in 'First Day Hikes'

QUITMAN, Miss. (WTOK) - Clarkco State Park in Quitman will sponsor free, guided hikes on New Year’s Day as part of America's State Parks First Day Hikes initiative in all 50 states. It's a way to encourage a healthy and rejuvenating start to 2018 and connect with the beautiful outdoors.

“First Day Hikes are a great way to cure cabin fever and burn off those extra holiday calories by starting off the New Year with an invigorating walk or hike in one of our beautiful state parks,” said Mississippi State Parks Director Jennifer Head.

The guided hike at Clarkco's 3.5 mile trail starts at 10 a.m. Jan. 1. Hikers will receive either a walking staff medallion, pin or magnet. The park will also serve coffee, hot chocolate and soup.

First Day Hikes started more than 25 years ago at the Blue Hills Reservation, a state park in Milton, Mass. Last year, more than 55,000 people participated on guided hikes that covered over 133,000 miles on 1,100 hikes across the country.
