Council approves camera provider

MERIDIAN, Miss. (WTOK) - The Meridian City Council has approved an order that will help the police department continue to obtain dash camera equipment.

The council approved Watch Guard Video as the sole source provider for the department's in-video car systems.

Capt. John Griffith says the cameras act as a 'Big Brother' system to help hold officers accountable.

In the wake of the recent officer-involved shooting, Griffith says its critical that the department has working equipment while in the line of duty.

"The emphasis is that we always want our video systems working and documenting everything that happens but unfortunately with any type of equipment, stuff happens; stuff goes wrong," Griffith said.

The in-vehicle cameras cost around $5,000 each.
