Deceased man identified in Toomsuba house fire

TOOMSUBA, Miss. (WTOK) - Crime tape now surrounds what’s left of a home on Carl Price road in Toomsuba after 35-year old Tony Gerzsenye died inside while it was filled with flames.

Chief Deputy Ward Calhoun said before it happened, he drove a car into the residence which led a female he was in an argument with to run from the home and call 911.

“Deputies saw Gerzsenye in the home where he was actually lighting the curtains on fire,” said Calhoun.

Calhoun said first responders pleaded with Gerzsenye to come outside of the burning home.

“They were unable to do that, the fire spread quickly, at that point they backed off and waited for fire units to arrive,” said Calhoun. “He was found in a back bedroom barricaded, it appears he died as a result of smoke inhalation.“

Lauderdale resident Betty Silliman said she was shocked when she heard what happened Wednesday night.

“Especially {since} it’s so close to me, I don’t know them but it’s sad,” said Silliman.

Calhoun said Gerzsenye lived at residence. The case is still under investigation.
