MERIDIAN, Miss. (WTOK) - Summer begins Friday and it’s one of the most important seasons of the year to donate blood. That’s why Vitalant will be holding the Donor’s Island Blood Drive Thursday.
“During the summer months our donations decline by 20%, so we’re really, really excited because this is going to give us the opportunity to supply all of our hospitals that we service here in Mississippi and Alabama an adequate blood supply,” says Beverly Clark, the senior donor recruitment representative for Vitalant.
With vehicle, boating, and other accidents on the increase in the summer months, there is a greater need for blood.
“A dear, sweet friend was just out bush hogging his field and he hit a hole, tractor turned over, and the bush hog ran over him and he had to immediately go into surgery, but you know what? It was the blood that was on the shelves in that hospital that saved that patient’s life,” Clark says.
Organizers are hoping that hundreds of people will show up to the event. There will be several door prizes given out throughout the event ranging from gift cards to a watch and a recliner.
“Just remember, blood cannot be made, blood cannot be bought, blood has to come from individuals like you and myself that will roll up our sleeve,” Clark says. “Yes, it does take a little time, but just remember- that time is priceless to that patient, or even to the family, that’s going to receive the blood that you donate.”
The Donor’s Island Blood Drive will be held at the Tommy Dulaney Center from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. For more information you can go onto www.vitalant.org.
