SCOOBA, Miss. (WTOK) - Less than four months ago, Dr. Rick Young stepped out of retirement to take on presidential duties at EMCC. Now, the school is looking for a new leader.

"I can't criticize that decision. That's the decision he made. The board through its action last evening accepted that resignation," says EMCC Board of Trustees Chairman Jimmie Moore.
Young previously served as the head of EMCC, retiring in 2015 after eleven years as president. He was asked to return when Dr. Thomas Huebner resigned in May.
Moore says Young informed him Monday of his decision to leave. Young says he felt there was a lack of confidence in his leadership ability and stepping down was the best option.
"That was what he told me in conversation this past Monday. And he felt like it would be better for the institution that he does dearly love because he served as our president for a number of years. He felt like it would be best that he go back into retirement and let us find another interim president," says Moore.
Moore admits Young's resignation caught the board by surprise, but the decision was made on good terms. The focus now shifts to quickly finding Young's replacement.
"We do have a candidate as an interim president. Obviously I cannot disclose who that is until we have conversations to see if they will accept that appointment, and we will move forward from there as expeditiously as we can," says Moore.
A bigger concern is the search for a permanent president. Moore says Young's sudden departure creates doubt whether the board can fill the position in time.
That deadline is October 31st.
"When will our new president be on board? Looking at the timing with the deadline being October 31st, fall semester being over in December, and you've got the holidays for Thanksgiving and Christmas, I personally feel like as an individual, not as a spokesman for the board of trustees, but I think it'll be January of 2019 before we have our permanent president," says Moore.
Young’s letter of resignation was submitted to the EMCC Board of Trustees during its September 4th meeting. Young was not present. The resignation is effective immediately.
