Family has questions after home catches on fire

LAUDERDALE COUNTY, Miss. (WTOK) - A family in Lauderdale County says they are confused after their vacant family home was destroyed by fire Wednesday afternoon.

The fire began before 4 p.m. at a home on Reece Road, off of Aycock Road, in the Long Creek community.

Ryan King tells Newscenter 11 the home belonged to his grandparents, but no one had lived there for several years because they are now in a nursing home.

King says he heard loud popping noises and thought they were gunshots, but he was concerned about how close to the house they sounded. That's when he went to look outside.

"I peeked out the door and I saw flames coming up, so I closed the door and put my shoes back on," says King. "I ran up here to my neighbor's house. They're my family also. They were all standing outside watching. It was already engulfed in flames at that time."

The family and fire officials both say the home had no power or gas. The Lauderdale County Sheriff's Department is investigating.
