First Responders: Firefighter Aubrey Pogue

MARTIN, Miss. (WTOK) - In First Responders, we head to the community of Martin where we find Aubrey Pogue. He’s a firefighter for the volunteer department and says it’s rewarding.

"I've always enjoyed playing with fire. I guess a little too much," Pogue says.

For Aubrey Pogue, his interest in firefighting began with the reasons firefighters are called out.

"I was probably 13 when I set the whole pasture on fire," Pogue says.

That was when Pogue was about 13 years old. Fast forward a few years later and he joined the martin volunteer fire department.

"It's not fun waking up at 2:00 in the morning to do whatever, but it is rewarding for sure," Pogue explains.

Some of his favorite parts about the job involve the active firefighting itself.

"There’s not a lot of things that get your adrenaline pumping when you go into a fire. As far as the whole department, I just enjoy it," Pogue says.

Ten years after joining the department Pogue says he's learned a few things along the way.

"Be humble and don't think you know everything because as soon as you get too cocky something is going to set you back for sure," Pogue says.

Although tough at times, Pogue's family supports him.

"She's not happy every time I leave. She gets worried when she calls me two hours later and I don't answer my phone, but she supports me for sure. I don't see me going anywhere in a long time," Pogue says.
