First Responders: Meridian Firefighter Shannon Mathis

MERIDIAN, Miss. (WTOK) - In First Responders we meet a Meridian firefighter who just completed a rigorous course. He's someone who loves helping others and plans on retiring as a fireman. We meet Shannon Mathis.

Senior firefighter Shannon Mathis has been with the Meridian Fire Department for eight years.

“My dad told me about a position open at the fire department, so I pursued it and got it. The rest is history,” Mathis says.

Mathis is from Quitman, but has been working in Meridian as a firefighter and is currently located at fire station 8 on Highway 19 South.

“I enjoy going to help at wrecks, medical calls, fires and that type of thing. I find it very gratifying to be able to help someone in need. To put a fire out before a total loss and things like that,” Mathis says.

Mathis says his wife and two girls support him and what he does for a living. He says his daughters are 5 and 9-years-old and one of them likes all of the roles he takes on.

“Of course my oldest daughter wants to be just like me. I’m a preaching, contractor fireman. She wants to be a fireman and a contractor. I try to explain to her that that’s not happening,” Mathis says.

Mathis just completed and passed a rigorous course for firefighters. It’s called Smoke Diver training. He was one of four to pass the test in his class.

“I want to give God all the glory. I believe he led me to it and brought me through it and gain the victory. It was hard,” Mathis explains.

Mathis says he plans on continuing his career in firefighting until he can retire, which is in about 15 years. Meanwhile, he says he will continue enjoying his job as a Meridian firefighter.

“There’s not many downsides. I get to hang out with my buddies at a really good station here in Meridian. I’m really enjoying the good life,” Mathis says.
