NEWTON COUNTY, Miss. (WTOK) - A combination of Mother Nature and a controlled burn created conditions that led to several wrecks on I-20 Tuesday morning.
Newton County Emergency Management Director Brian Taylor says wrecks around Exit 100 at Lake were due to a combination of fog and smoke from a controlled burn limiting visibility.
Taylor said a resident was legally burning some brush piles on property parallel to the interstate.
Taylor says five vehicles were involved in the I-20 crash but none of the injuries were life-threatening.
A separate 8-vehicle crash on Highway 80, just under the I-20 overpass,
wrecked because of the same poor visibility, but there were no injuries.
Taylor is advising drivers in that area to be cautious the next couple of mornings because the same conditions could happen.
