LAUDERDALE COUNTY, Miss. (WTOK) - The start of the new year means the kickoff of homestead exemption season in the twin states. Homeowners have from January 1st to April 1st in Mississippi and from January 1st to October 1st in Alabama to file for homestead exemption. This declaration allows residents to save on property taxes. To accommodate residents, the Lauderdale County Tax Assessor's Office will be open extra hours.
"We're going to be open on Saturdays," says Whitney Hodges, who is the Chief Deputy for the Lauderdale County Tax Assessor's Office. "We'll be open one Saturday at the end of January, and the last Saturday in February. Plus, we'll be open the last Saturday in March from 8 AM until noon."
People who can file for homestead exemption are new homeowners, or those who have made a change on their deed.
