MERIDIAN, Miss. (WTOK)- Young men’s and women’s rodeo teams from the south wrapped up their last ride here in Meridian at the Lauderdale County Agri-Center.
Ten colleges and universities riders from all over the Ozark Region participated in the 8th Annual Intercollegiate Rodeo. 250 riders tested their skills on thousand-pound horses. The event included bareback riding, tie-down roping, breakaway roping, saddle bronco riding, and bull riding. Riders talked to us about the long preparation that goes into barrel racing.
"It takes time and energy. It's not something you can find a horse and go ride. You have to exercise the horse every day, you have to feed them right, you have to take care of them," says EACC rider - Zadie Busby.
"Throughout the week I would get my horse out and exercise her. I will work her on the barrels to make sure she got her mind right. It's all to get her prepared for a good run," says participant Hannah Collins.
The goal is to make it to the College National Finals Rodeo in Casper, Wyoming. Organizers say they hope to be back in Meridian next year.
