JACKSON, Miss. (WTOK) - A jockey who was injured during a race at the Neshoba County Fair has died at University Medical Center.
Kerry "Joe" Jernigan, 56, was hurt in a race Aug. 2 as a horse lost its balance and slid onto its side, throwing the jockey to the ground.
The news was posted Thursday to the Mississippi Horse Racing Review's Facebook page, which also reported Jernigan underwent surgery Wednesday. There were many messages of condolence posted there, as well as on his own Facebook page.
Jernigan, of Houston, Miss., was well-known in the racing community.
Funeral arrangements have been finalized and Jernigan's obituary appears below:
Kerry Joe Jernigan, 56, passed away on Thursday, August 8, 2019, at United Methodist Medical Center in Jackson, Mississippi. Joe was born at in Houston, Mississippi on March 12, 1963. He was a humble, loving, soft-spoken and kindhearted gentleman. He was loved by anybody, family, friends and horsemen alike. He was soulmate and best friend to Kris Enman. He was a loving partner, father, friend and sportsman. His passions also included hunting, fishing and most sought love was his love for horses.
Funeral services will be held at Houston Funeral Home in Houston, Miss., on Sunday, Aug. 11, 2019, at 3 p.m. with Dr. Edward Smith officiating.
Burial will be at Asbury Cemetery in Van Vleet, Miss.
Houston Funeral Home will be in charge arrangements.
Visitation will be Sunday, Aug. 11, 2019, at Houston Funeral Home in from 1 p.m. until time of service, 3 p.m.
Joe Jernigan is survived his fiancé, Kris Enman of Pheba, Miss.; his father; Jimmy Smith Jernigan; his daughters, Angela Jernigan of Booneville, Miss., Lacy Jernigan of Hernando, Miss., and Roxanne (Dylan) Douglas of Mantee, Miss., his sons, Justin Jernigan of Houston, Miss., and Cole (Lydia) Jernigan of Pontotoc, Miss., her sister, Teri (George) Santelle of West Point, Miss., and brother, Bryan (Lori) Jernigan of Hernando, Miss., 9 grandchildren, a host of aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
Jernigan is preceded in death by his stepmother, Doris Jernigan, and a host of aunts and uncles.
Pallbearers will be Robby Blade, Ken Butler, Adam Winfield, Dillon Sawtelle, Mark Sawtelle, and Dwayne Perry.
Honorary pallbearers will be Mike Reed and Brock Carter.
