LAUDERDALE COUNTY, Miss. (WTOK) - Another 'jury scam' is being tried in Lauderdale County, and this time uses the name of a local deputy.
Circuit Clerk Donna Jill Johnson says her office received reports about the scam Thursday and Friday.
The victim gets a phone call, purportedly from Deputy Willie Graham, and is then threatened for 'missing jury duty' and told to pay money to pay fines or avoid being arrested.
Graham is not making the calls and is not involved in the scam.
Scam callers use intimidation to try to get $200 or more through MoneyPak or some other card.
Johnson says in the latest version, intended victims were even threatened with being featured on CrimeNet. Some victims have been called multiple times as the scammers try to get more money.
The courts and law enforcement NEVER require money to be exchanged concerning missing jury duty.
