Juvenile injured in shooting, brother in custody
A teenage girl was shot Friday morning at Western Gardens Apartments in Meridian. Meridian police believe her brother is responsible.
Sgt. Dareall Thompson says the shooting happened around 11:45 a.m. and tells Newscenter 11 the girl was taken to a local hospital.
The victim's 15-year-old brother was taken into custody and is being questioned by detectives. Sgt. Thompson says investigators are still trying to find out if this was an accidental shooting.
"At this time, our investigators are interviewing (the victim's brother), asking questions, trying to figure out what happened," Sgt. Thompson says. "They are also interviewing people that were inside the residence when it happened."
Thompson says the siblings were upstairs in an apartment when the shooting happened. The gun has been recovered. Police only describe the weapon as a handgun.
"It's very tough. It's a tough time for the family and also the brother we took into custody," Sgt. Thompson says. "Guns, we always say, are not a toy."
As of late Friday afternoon, police say the girl's injuries are very serious. Newscenter 11 will keep you updated as we learn more.
