Kemper Co. sheriff: Victim was 'ambushed'

KEMPER COUNTY, Miss. (WTOK) - Kemper County investigators say an ongoing investigation has revealed that Emmanuel Morries, 38, was ambushed in early July near Preston. He was gunned down on the side of a Kemper County road.

So far, no arrest has been made. However, investigators say someone has the key that could change that.

"We're working closely with the FBI, ATF and postal inspectors," says Kemper County Sheriff James Moore. He says help from these agencies is critical in this case.

"There's so much information coming in," says Moore, "and we're taking that information. We're running down every bit of the information we're getting."

In early July, Morries was found where's he's thought to have been shot, on the side of Indian Branch Road near Preston. Sheriff Moore says the Preston native had been shot twice, once at close range and once from a distance.

"Basically, yes he was ambushed because he was led to this location," says Moore. "When he left to go to this location he knew who he was going to meet. Did he know he was going to meet two people? I don't know."

Moore says some factors are making this investigation more complicated than most. This includes the remote location where it happened and the lack of physical evidence. However, he says phone information from the location is now being examined to help crack the case.

At this time investigators are not releasing a motive.

"I promise you, if we find out that somebody was holding information, then they're going to be brought to justice as well," says Sheriff Moore. "I promise you that this sheriff's department will not rest until we bring those responsible to justice."

Anyone with information that could lead to an arrest in this case is asked to call the Kemper County Sheriff's Department at 601-743-4880 or the East Mississippi Crimestoppers line at 855-485-8477.
