LaBiche Jewelers handing out eclipse glasses

MERIDIAN, Miss. (WTOK) - People across the United States are preparing for the upcoming solar eclipse, and one local business owner is trying to help.

Steve LaBiche, owner of LaBiche Jewelers in downtown Meridian, is handing out 1,000 eclipse glasses - one to every person who walks in the door.

"Just growing up in my time period, people went on the moon. I was born in '62," LaBiche says. "So this is going to be the closest thing I can do with my son that's going to be that kind of experience, a once in a lifetime kind of thing with nature."

The eclipse should be an incredible sight, but NASA is warning viewers not to look directly at the sun without using specially- approved eclipse glasses. Our area will see about 90 percent coverage, and you can expect the sky to get much darker.

"I told my wife, 'This is the only time that I cannot guarantee your jewelry will shine if you bought it from LaBiche Jewelers,'" LaBiche laughs.

LaBiche will continue to give out the glasses until they hand out all 1,000. The eclipse will pass our area around 1:30 p.m. on Aug. 21.
