Local church looking to rebuild after sanctuary burned in January

QUITMAN, Miss. (WTOK) - Nearly five months after their church was destroyed in a fire, members of East Pleasant Grove Baptist Church are planning to rebuild.

The church will host a groundbreaking service Sunday to officially mark the start of construction for a new church building.

Clarke County Sheriff Todd Kemp is a member of East Pleasant Grove. He says the congregation can’t wait to start the new process.

“Everyone’s been anxious," said Sheriff Kemp. "We’ve been meeting in the fire department and everybody’s been anxious about getting a plan together."

Members of the church told Newscenter 11 the church building will look similar to the previous one. Church member Jane Davis fought back tears as she remembered the day it burned.

"We've been blessed," said Davis. "I watched it burn and I watched them clean off the debris and haul it off."

Davis says despite the trouble the church has experienced this year, the groundbreaking ceremony is the start of something great.

"I can't wait to take that shovel full of dirt and move it," said Davis.

Preacher Brad Bakane said he expects the church building to be ready anywhere from 8 months to a year.
