MERIDIAN, Miss. (WTOK) - Many families spend Thanksgiving Day together laughing and talking over a meal.
Pastor of Community Outreach Church in Meridian Samuel Merriweather says the church serves hot meals on Thanksgiving for those who don’t have the opportunity to do so.
“I’m glad to have a group of people that I don’t even have to call anymore,” said Merriweather. “They’re consistent in doing this here every year.”
Merriweather said although serving on the holiday takes him away from his own family for a few hours, it’s worth seeing the smiles on people’s faces.
“I love it, people call me and come by the church wanting to show their appreciation,” said Merriweather. “I even had some say ‘When I start doing better I’ll pay you’ and I let them know you can’t pay me for this this, this is a gift.”
A gift April Grace says the church has given for 27 years.
“It makes me feel good to give back to the community because the community is what builds the community up,” said Grace.
After serving at the church building, members delivered meals to families at their homes.
