Local military dad surprises daughter at band camp
A West Lauderdale High School student got a huge surprise when she attended band camp on Monday.
Abbey Carter’s father, Command Master Chief Jonas Carter, has been on deployment since April and wasn’t due back until November or even December.
He walked into her class and was greeted by an enormous hug from an emotional Abbey. The whole class cheered and clapped.
The reunion was possible after the USS Harry S. Truman returned to Virginia sooner than planned after a change in defense strategy. For the Carter family, it's not a day too soon and dad and daughter have a lot to catch up on.
"It showed me that I had to grow up a little, help Mom around the house. But it's not too bad, we called and Facetimed quite frequently,” says Abbey.
The surprise was kept under wraps by family members and friends as well as WLHS Band Director, David McKinney.
"Abbey’s a new student to us this year so (her classmates) are very excited about her. They actually didn't know until he walked in so it was pretty cool," he says.
