Local schools taking more safety precautions

MERIDAN, Miss. (WTOK)- Northeast High School is stepping up its security by adding new safety measures this year.

The school will now have metal detector rods at the gates and extra fencing to separate the home side and the visitor side.

Police presence has been doubled for the first game against Meridian. Northeast athletic director Lewis Lightsey says these new procedures are important, so it can ensure everyone stays safe at the game.

"We've been going with the last couple of years hopefully getting this procedure into place and using it in our games," said Lightsey. With this being the first game and with a large crowd, it's a good time for us to get started and to get these procedures into place."

Meridian defeated Northeast Lauderdale 22-18 in the game tonight.
