MERIDIAN, Miss. (WTOK) - Stores across the state of Mississippi are gearing up for one of the biggest shopping weekends of the year.

“Tax free weekend is always one of the busiest shopping days of the year for back the school uniforms and also the following week which is the week that school starts,” explained Clinton Hales, Co-Owner of the Liberty Shop.

Tax free weekend begins at 12:01 Friday morning and will continue until midnight on Saturday and this has local stores gearing up for bigger than average crowds.

“We are fully stocked with all school colors and styles for not only Meridian Public Schools but Lauderdale County Schools, the private schools in our area, the surrounding counties, and so all the school colors are in stock,” explained Hales.

During the two days most clothing and shoe items in Mississippi will have a 7% discount on it thanks to the tax free holiday, for those items totaling under $100. That is why many stores are offering deals on uniforms.

“If you bring a $100 dollar bills you get one penny back so it is $99.99 and you save seven dollars and that really adds up if you have multiple children. If you have three or four kids that needs back to school uniforms you could save upwards of $25 to $30 on your uniforms this weekend,” said Hales.

With big crowds expected this weekend, local stores are beefing up staffing and have the shelves stocked and even have extended hours to be prepared for tax-free weekend.

“We have extended hours Friday and Saturday, we will be open from 8:30 in the morning until 7 that night,” said Hales.

While certain items are not tax-free such as school supplies, jewelry, and computers, getting clothing and shoes-tax free can help save families money and by shopping local can give back to the community.

“Your tax dollars stay in town and it goes back into the community,” said Hales. “We are invested in to Meridian and we would like those in Meridian to shop with us as well.”
