MERIDIAN, Miss. (WTOK) - It’s time for the largest blood drive in east Mississippi and west Alabama. The MASH Bash Blood Drive is hours away from kicking off.
“We have been having it annually for over 20 years. This is our opportunity to refill our shelves coming off the Christmas holiday, but yet going into New Year’s Eve,” Chatham says.
This year-end blood drive has been going for many years now. Chatham says this drive will play a vital role in filling blood needs for several hospitals in and around our area.
“That’s here as well as our surrounding areas and other hospitals we provide for. That’s basically what it is. We are making sure that all of our hospitals we provide for have blood on the shelf,” Chatham says.
If you would like to give the gift of life this holiday season, appointments can made online or you can just show up at the Tommy Dulaney Center to donate.
“We are certainly welcoming walk-ins, but we encourage you to setup an appointment because it give you priority,” Chatham explains
In 2016, the goal of 315 units of blood was met. The total ended up being 318. This year they are hoping to gather over 300 units. A goal Chatham says it obtainable if people turnout, but she says many people have had the flu recently and that might hurt the numbers.
“I am a little concerned this year because the flu has been rampant. If you’re thinking about coming and you’re feeling well, please come on,” Chatham says.
There are incentives for those who come to donate. Door prizes include several items including a recliner and some nice watches. There will also be a lot of food, drinks and even desserts.
Mash Bash will begin at 10:00 a.m. and run until 7:00 p.m. At the Tommy Dulaney Center on Highway 19 North. You may schedule an appointment by clicking the attached link.
