MCC reschedules fall commencement, pinning ceremonies

MERIDIAN, Miss. (WTOK) - Meridian Community College has set a new date for its fall commencement program, which was cancelled in December due to concern about potentially icy road conditions.

The graduation ceremony will be held Friday, Jan. 26, at 6 p.m. at the Temple Theatre.

Some fall graduates were upset when the Dec. 8 program was cancelled.

Anyone who had intended to participate in the December program is encouraged to do so on Jan. 26. MCC said it's contacting graduates by email to make sure they have notification about the rescheduled ceremony.

Those students who were certified to graduate and intended to participate in December should confirm by e-mail to or by calling the MCC Student Services Office at 601-484-8627.

Also, those graduates who have not as yet turned in their caps and gowns and intend to participate should retain them to use in the rescheduled program. Those who have already turned in their caps and gowns will be reissued regalia in the Temple Theatre Ballroom prior to the start of the program.

Because the program had to be rescheduled, graduates will not be assessed the regular commencement participation fee, according to Welden.

“It was regrettable that in the cause of safety that the original program had to be cancelled,” said MCC president, Dr. Scott Elliott. “It was the last thing we wanted to do. Nonetheless, we want to provide this alternative opportunity for graduates and their loved ones to share in this time to celebrate a lifetime milestone and achievement.”

Welden said that fall graduates who elect not to participate in the Jan. 26 program will also be invited to be awarded their diplomas during the May 4 commencement program typically held at the Evangel Temple.

In addition to the Jan. 26 commencement program, MCC has rescheduled its fall nursing pinning program for Tuesday, Jan. 9, for both LPN and ADN graduates at 4 p.m. in the McCain Theater on campus. All fall nursing graduates are encouraged to participate. For additional information, call 601-484-8745.
