MHA awards $70,000 in scholarships
Ten Meridian High School graduating seniors were awarded scholarships by the Meridian Housing Authority at a luncheon Wednesday.
The scholarships are given to recognize exceptional public housing residents who a furthering their education by going to college. MHS senior SaFrench Terry received the biggest award Wednesday, the Jeanelle Kidd Hope VI Endowment Scholarship which is worth $60,000.
“We had our award ceremony at the school and everybody was getting a $1,000 [scholarship], so I’m like, “well then did I not qualify?” But then my name got called for the $60,000 [scholarship], so it’s kind of like a big accomplishment, I don’t have to worry about tuition for school.”
James Carter, the founder of the Carter Foundation, was the keynote speaker at the luncheon.
