MERIDIAN, Miss. (WTOK) - Twenty-seven agencies gathered at the Meridian City Hall auditorium for the Meridian Public School District’s Community Link Up.
“The purpose of the event is to bring all of the local agencies to one central location and also to bring our support staff and parents together and to form relationships,” says Deidre Bland, the dropout prevention specialist with MPSD. “Basically so that they all can be aware of what services are here that can benefit the families and the students that we serve in the Meridian Public School District.”
Each agency provides a unique service to students and their families.
“We had an array of groups that came out today and we’re so thankful, we had Weems here, we’ve had Youth Challenge, French Academy, we’ve also had a branch of the military, we’ve had a representative from Camp Destiny, which is an after school program,” Bland says. “An array of individuals or agencies that are here that can meet the needs of the students that we are serving every day.”
Bland says that this event is an important way for the agencies and the public to get on the same page with all of the needs in the community.
“We want to make sure that we’re able to meet all of the needs of not only our students, but also the families,” Bland explains. “We want for everybody to be successful, so it takes a partnership; just like it takes a village to raise a child, so we want to make sure that everyone is aware of what they have access to right here in our community.”
The event was organized by Dropout Prevention and Parent and Community Engagement.
