MPSD receives new arts grant
The Meridian Public School District has been awarded seven grants from the Mississippi Arts Commission to be used this school year.
Six schools applied for and received grants in the Whole Schools program.
"Any Given Child Meridian" received a project grant to have a teaching artist for pre-K and kindergarten classes. The artist will provide professional development for teachers in those grades.
The grants total almost $26,000.
"We want to improve student engagement and motivation," said Clair Huff, the arts coordinator for the district. "We believe the arts will do those things within our school district. We have seen the data from across the state. Students who are involved in the Whole Schools Initiative with arts integration score higher."
The district added Crestwood and West Hills to its Whole Schools Initiative this year.
