Meridian airport hosts TSA PreCheck enrollment

MERIDIAN, Miss. (WTOK) - The TSA is introducing a fast and easy process to help take away the stress of travel.

"PreCheck-check has been around for some time now but it has not been around Meridian. You had to go somewhere else. 100-150 miles away to go through the process. Well this is a great new thing that TSA is doing. They're bringing PreCheck-Check to the passengers," said Tom Williams, president of the Meridian Airport Authority.

This week in Meridian, frequent flyers and causal passengers may sign up for the pre-enroll program. All you have to do is schedule an appointment and in 5 minutes you can be on your way to speedy travel.

"For example you don't have to take your shoes off. You don't have to unpack your carry-on bag. And you don't have to take a light jacket off. So it streamlines the process which helps you as a passenger but it also helps the TSA move lines along faster," said Williams.

Before TSA came to the Queen City, travelers had to commute to either Vicksburg or Gulfport for pre-check approval. Passengers we caught up with say bringing the service to the Meridian Airport has helped them in more ways than one.

"A great deal because I've had the experience of being lagged behind with my family always ahead of me because they already have a pass to go ahead, so I'm not going to be the one this year," said traveler Barbara Brown.

Approval only takes 30 days. All you need is a valid I.D., proof of citizenship and a desire to travel.

"Well we love traveling out of Meridian because it is small and I think it's a great asset that they were able to bring that here, That way we didn't have to travel to other places and I've heard of many people who have signed up for this and it was a quick and easy process," said traveler Tracy Bell.

The temporary application center will be available until this Friday. Hours to sign up are from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. and from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. The application fee is $85 and is valid for 5 years.
