GAINESVILLE, Ala. (WTOK) - Family members of missing Geiger businessman, Robert Scott, were on scene as divers recovered their loved one's body. Scott was reported missing around two weeks ago by family members who say he was on his way to Tuscaloosa the last time they saw him.
Sumter County Sheriff Brian Harris says a rescue squad member called and reported tracks leading into a pond off Highway 39 near Heflin Dam in Gainesville Friday night. First responders from Sumter and Greene Counties, along with Tuscaloosa Fire and Rescue, responded to the call and recovered a truck belonging to Scott.
"They responded with the dive team. They found the vehicle Friday night and a new crew was able to come Saturday morning and recover the body," says Sheriff Harris.
Sheriff Harris confirms the body of Robert Scott was located in the pond and recovered around noon.
"Unfortunately, it was the body of Mr. Scott," mentions Sheriff Harris.
Greene County Sheriff Jonathan Benison says no foul play is suspected and it appears to have been an accident.
"We will be conducting an autopsy and will have further information once that has been conducted by the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences," explains Sheriff Benison.
Sheriff Benison mentions both Sumter and Greene Counties worked together to help give Scott's family answers as to what happened to their loved one.
"By becoming unified with other law enforcement agencies and citizens of both counties, I think it shows unity, and that's why this family is getting some closure at this time," mentions Sheriff Benison.
An official cause of death is not known. Both departments say they are thankful to everyone that helped in the investigation.
