The north entrance of the Mississippi Capitol will be closed for the next year during the rebuilding of the second-floor terrace above it.

The Department of Finance and Administration says the terrace is deteriorating from leaks.

Officials announced Monday that the north lobby facing High Street is closing to rebuild the terrace with new structural supports and waterproof it. New heating and air conditioning, electrical and lighting systems are also planned.

Visitors are being directed to the south entrance facing Mississippi Street.

Lawson Newman of WFT Architects says the rebuilding will protect original materials and renovate areas consistent with the Capitol's 1903 design.

The Capitol was recently designated a National Historic Landmark.

Earlier phases of the renovation have focused on the building's roof and dome.
