MERIDIAN, Miss. (WTOK) - Almost three years after its grand re-opening, CertainTeed is shutting its doors once more.
The company announced this week the ceiling tile manufacturing plant is closing its Meridian facility again.
"What we're told is the market's gone flat, they have other facilities that do the same product," East Mississippi Business Development Corporation president Bill Hannah says.
The closure will impact 90 direct employees and a handful of others, who are contracted.
"You can't kind of shade that any other way than that's a bad thing for those folks," Hannah says.
There is a bit of good news for those employees, though. Mayor Percy Bland tells Newscenter 11 he understands those employees have been offered positions in other areas of the company. Hannah says the employees could also be getting job offers from other companies in the near future.
"The second it got out in the community, we started getting calls from other companies wanting to know how they can access those employees," he says.
Hannah isn't giving specifics on which companies - only that they are other industrial facilities in the area, needing the same type of industrial employees.
He says it will take some time to close the facility, but that will happen over the next month or so.
CertainTeed released a statement saying:
“CertainTeed Ceilings has made the difficult decision to close its facility in Meridian, Mississippi. This was a strategic business decision made after a careful analysis of all possible solutions across the CertainTeed Ceilings manufacturing network. We understand the impact of this decision on the local community, and we respect the great work by all of our employees throughout the years.”
